Firstly, and as become apparent below, manufacturers and therefore guitarists become obsessed with the DC resistance, measured in kilo ohms ( k ), of guitar pickups. This measurement is pretty much useless when assessing a pickups power as all it does is tell you how much power drop their is over the particular length of wire used to make the pickup, it does nothing. NOTHING I TELL YOU, to give any true view of the power output of the pickup. The longer the piece of wire used to wind the pickup, then the higher the resistance - BUT - it still wont tell you what sort of power output the pickup generates.

The measurement of 'power output' or to give it it's correct title inductance means measuring the output in Henrys ( the unit of measurement of inductance ) This will give amore accurate reading as it measures the interactive effect of the copper wire coil, the magnetic field ( hugely important ) and the pickup chassis and casings.

For example take a look at the resistance readings for our J Bass Stealth which has a resiatnce of 6.44 k-ohms and compare it to the chrome Tele neck pup that has a measured resistance of 6k. The Tele pup has a lower resistance than the J Bass so is more powerful by conventional thinking - WRONG WRONG WRONG go to the bottom of the class !!. The J Bass pup has a power output of 3.31 Henry whereas the Tele with the lower resiatnce measurement has a power output of 3.5 Henry. The Tele pup has around 7% less windings ( DC resistance ) than the J Bass yet puts out 6-7% more power. This is due to the effect the chrome metal casing has on ampligfying the magnetic field around the copper wire coil increasing the power output.

OK so I can hear you all now saying "Josi's just plucked that one example out of the air to prove what he's saying" and I say Nope Oh Yea Of Little Faith - here's another.

A Firebucker has a DC resistance of 8.02k and a Soapy Joe neck P90 has lower resiatance of 7.8k. But the Soapy puts out 6.2 Henry whereas the FireBucker generates 3.88H. Why ? The Saopy has a much bigger stronger magnet and a dirty great bigger metal baseplate than the Firebucker and when acting with the coil windings produces nearly twice as much power.

OK another quick one for those who still disbelieve that just talking about DC resistance gives not a clue to the output of a pickup. A Warman Dominator is 14.9k with an output of 10.99 Henry yet the Destroyer measures 16k ( see higher ohmage ) and puts out 7.6 Henry of power.

So as you can now see resistance is truly useless you need to know the power output ( inductance ) to gain an insight into just how much a pickup is going to power your amp shape the sound of your music.
